Conviction, Of Gods and Men

I've watched 2 films recently, Conviction & Of Gods and Men, and realize how corrupted the world we live in is.

Men (women included) use every possible way to gain something for themselves. Even at the expense of someone else's life. How & when did we turn this way? Why is gaining something for ourselves so much more important than the value of another's life?

In Conviction, police officer Nancy Taylor would do anything to gain an award. She did it by perverting the law and threatening people into giving false witness. As a result, an innocent man, Kenneth Waters, was placed in jail obtaining a life sentence without parole.

In Of Gods and Men, terrorist are seen killing people in the name of religious purposes. How did religion become so violent?! Sadly, even more violence is done in the name of religion compared to anything else. How did man, whom God created in His image, became so cold to the point of killing with no hesitation? Even when the French monks took in an injured terrorist and gave him medical attention, still in the end we see that the terrorist kidnapped the monks and threatened to kill them if the French government will not free their 'friends'/accomplices. Which in the end, they did kill the monks.

Both films are adapted from real stories.

The world is filled with people like this... Can we change them? Can we accept them? Can we do anything about them?

It is probably beyond our power to do anything physically but we can always pray. Pray that God will change their hearts.

Book : Yasmin Ahmad's Films

Yasmin Ahmad, who could forget her or her works. Unless you're not a Malaysian.

I've just bought a book entitled Yasmin Ahmad's Films which talks about her, her movies and her TV Commercials.

I've watched most of her TV Commercials but not her movies. Something I need to do. Going through the ideology behind the movie but have not actually view it makes me feel a little lost as I couldn't fully comprehend what the book is saying.

The review for the book might take a long time as I would want to watch her movies before reading what is behind it.

Review : Humble Pie by Gordon Ramsay

Interestingly, Gordon Ramsay(GR), one of the most successful chef has a bad start in life. Moving around UK, settling in council houses. Abusive dad. Tough life.

But it does show that you could still be very successful in life with a not so impressive childhood behind you. What you need is the determination and aim to succeed in life. Many people would follow the behaviour of their parents (just like GR's brother, Ronnie) but GR proved to many that you could break away from it. He has a lovely home, wife & 4 children who does not need to go through what he went through.

Just to share a few things I found interesting in his autobiography.

"I'll always encourage the youngest chap in the kitchen, the porter or the pot washer, the little snot that no one else notices or cares about" p.104

Being a young chap in Paris he knew how it felt like to be alone, he knew how lonely and isolated a person could be and wherever & whenever he could, he would encourage those he thinks needs encouragement. Sometimes we see Hell's Kitchen and think that GR is a terrible and vulgar chef but not many actually see the softer side of him. Don't judge a book by its cover.

"What makes me really pissed off in the kitchen? What makes me explode? Lies." p.186

So... that's why he keeps screaming and shouting and cursing!
[Sidetrack : This quote makes me think of God who created us. How He wants us to be like Him but often time we fall short of that and we lie to Him. Imagine if God was like GR, heaven wouldn't be a peaceful place as He would be screaming at us everytime we say a lie. But no, our God is a forgiving God but that doesn't mean we should continue sinning.]

"Humility is important when you start out" p.193

Starting a job as a young chef or any other industry for that matter, I think we must always know where we stand. We can't have a big head thinking we are the best because there are others in the company who would surely know better than us. Having humility is the thing that will help us go far in life. Just like how it brought GR to be where he is now.

It's interesting what we could learn from reading about someone else's life. Sometimes we're so trapped in our own world thinking that we are living the worst life ever and could never escape from the misery & destiny that we have. But as GR has proven, having a bad start in life doesn't mean we cannot have a good ending in life. To anyone reading this who thinks life is miserable, go grab GR's book and read for yourself how terrible his childhood was. Maybe that will change your opinion about your future.

I shall end with a quote from Gordon Ramsay Humble Pie.

"I think good food is important. It can be life-changing" p. 284

I know my blog has been pretty dead. It's not like I don't have any photos to share it's just that blogging has become some sort of a routine. Anyway, I'm back (maybe).

Lately I've been picking up a hobby that I've pretty much laid aside; reading. So, I've decided that maybe I could share what I'm reading and maybe do a book review after I've finish reading.

I'm currently reading Humble Pie by Gordon Ramsay.

Borrowed from the Central Library today and I'm about 1/3 through the book. It's interesting to know what (probably) the world's most vulgar chef went through before he is well known.

Probably do a review in a few days time.

The warmth was so comfortable we didn't want to leave it.

But of course we had to in the end... If not, we would be stuck in the garden for the whole night! Not a good idea...

By the time we left, it was already turning dark.

We then walk, took bus and train to finally reach back to Nottingham. A tired but interesting adventure I must say.

We went to visit my dad's friend at Rotherham, South Yorkshire. We didn't really go out looking around as it was more like a catch-up session after not meeting for many years!

They have a really big garden!

My dad's friend has this motorhome! It was my first time inside one so I was really excited! Haha.

We stayed there for a night, then drove off to Bolton the next day.

I was walking around Market Square, Nottingham today and saw this stall selling absolutely beautiful cupcakes!

I asked the lady if I could take photos of her cupcakes and she said yes.

Here are the cupcakes.

After taking the photos, I asked if she would like me to send the photos back to her and she said ok, so I did. I take this as an opportunity to show her what I can do and hope that she would ask me to take photos for her cupcakes. Hehe.

Day 4 & 6 : Nottingham

On the 4th day of my parent's trip to UK was my graduation!

Day 5 was a Sunday so we went to church & I went to take photo for a baptism later the same day

On Day 6, we walk around Nottingham

Went to the Windmill. Too bad it was closed on Mondays! So we only managed to see the outside

We then had lunch at Pitcher & Piano
The food was really nice & the portion was big! Price was kinda ok for the size of it.


The building used to be a church, hence all the stained glass


The atmosphere of the restaurant was really nice.

London : Day 2

Looking at the title you might be asking, "Did I miss London : Day 1?" My answer to you is "No". I'm really starting my trip with my parents around UK with the 2nd day as there wasn't much to show from the first day.

So, yes, London : Day 2.

We took a train from Belvedere where we stayed with my mum's friend & her family to the heart of London

St. Paul's cathedral was our first stop. Didn't go in as the entrance fees was £11 for adult if not mistaken

Went to the Millenium Bridge

Went to Leicester Square to buy theatre ticket for Sister Act

Saw an organice penguin on the way to London Paladium

Watched Sister Act

Walked along Oxford Street

Enjoyed the Christmas deco from various big companies

Then we left for Belvedere.

Being here for just a while I came to the realization of why people sell/buy/wear head gear that cover their ears! It was crazy loud! Especially the 500cc ones!

I've landed and travelled to Nottingham. Pretty much settled down in my room.

Photo taken in summer, hence the sun & shadow.

Weather have been quite windy and wet and cold.

I suddenly thought of kerepok lekor this morning! One of the food that I didn't eat while I was back in Malaysia! Yes, randomness.

Anyway, time to adjust to the British way of living. Fish and chips. *Ugh-s silently in the corner*

It's too quiet here! Miss the 'noise' back home.

On 23rd Septerber I went to Penang. One of the places I visited to take photos was the Snake Temple.

What makes this temple so specila was that there were real live poisonous vipers in the temple! And none of these vipers are in cage!

Heathrow to KLIA

On 11 September 2009, I left UK to come back to Malaysia. I was on the Singapore Airline's Airbus A380. The plane was just 5 days old!
